Abstract
We combine a mode-matching technique and Galerkin's method to study the propagation properties of microstrip lines on a lossy inhomogeneous substrate, which has important applications but can not be solved by conventional spectral domain methods. Poisson's equation with a complex permittivity is derived on which the eigenmodes in each inhomogeneous layer are solved numerically. The Green's function is derived based on the reflection matrices. Galerkin's method is then applied to calculate the capacitance and conductance matrices of microstrip lines embedded in such a medium.
