Abstract
The propagation constant of microstrip lines on a lossy inhomogeneous substrate is analysed by using a mode-matching technique and the Galerkin method. Poisson's equation with a complex permittivity is derived based on the electroquasistatic approximation. Eigenmodes in each inhomogeneous layer are obtained by solving the Poisson equation. Next, a mode-matching technique is applied to derive Green's function for a line charge in the lossy inhomogeneous layered medium. The Galerkin method is then applied to calculate the capacitance and conductance matrices of microstrip lines embedded in such a medium. Both single and coupled microstrip lines are analysed.
