Abstract
Sorbents were prepared from recycled glass bottles and hydrated lime by slurrying the solids with water and subsequent drying. The reactivites toward SO2 of these sorbents were measured at conditions prevailing in dry or semidry flue-gas desulfurization processes. Due to the formation of calcium silicate hydrate, the sorbents have greater specific surface areas and pore volumes, and are more reactive them Ca(OH)2 (HL). The structural properties and the reactivity of a sorbent were markedly affected by the glass/HL weight ratio. The utilization of Ca in a sorbent increased with increasing glass/HL ratio. The sorbent with a glass/HL ratio of 30/70 had the maximum SO2 capture (0.45 gSO2/g sorbent). The sorbent reactivity increased as slurrying temperature , time, and water/solid weight ratio increased and leveled off when they reached 90℃,8h,and 10/1,respectively. The sorbent reactivity increased when smaller glass particles were used. The addition of NaOH enhanced the sorbent reactivity for sorbents prepared with large glass particles or with low glass content . The addition of CaSO4.1/2H2O increased the specific surface area of the sorbnet, but did not increase the sorbent reactivity. The results of this study may contribute to the preparation of new high-efficiency SO2 sorbents and the utilization of recycled glass bottles.
