Abstract
Cheng Nan-jung, who showed civil disobedience by being the first Taiwanese revolutionist carrying out self-immolation, devoted his life in pursuit of Freedom of Speech in Taiwan. He happened to have grown up right after the 228 Accident when KMT was imposing martial law as long as 38 years during its governance, the so-called White Terror period. Throughout his life, Cheng has been greatly involved with the development of Democracy in Taiwan. The essay aims to observe the changing of Taiwanese democracy and to review the transitional justice theory along with Cheng’s struggle and achievements, political campaigns, momentum behind the actions and the significance of his self-immolation. Even lately, both the controversy about naming Nan-jung Plaza in National Cheng Kung University in 2013 and the Sunflower Student Movement in 2014, Cheng’s honorable spirit remains truly inspiring.
