Abstract
T1-6Al-4V and 17-4PH stainless steel with various barrier layers are joined by infrared vacuum brazing using two silver-based braze alloys, 72Ag-28Cu and 63Ag-35.25Cu-1.75Ti in weight percent, respectively. Both cr(10µm) and Ni(1µm)/Cr(10µm) coated 17-4PH stainless steel plates are evaluated in the study. The introduction of Cr or Cr/Ni barrier layers can effectively inhibit the interdiffusion between the 17-4PH SS and the molten braze during infrared brazing. Accordingly, the formation of brittle Ti-Fe intermetallics in the brazed joint can be avoided, and the interfacial TiFe phase is replaced by Ti3Cu4, TiCu and TiCr2 phases. Average shear strengths of the infrared brazed joints with barrier layers are significantly improved from approximately 50MPa into 200MPa. The application of Cr or Cr/Ni barrier layers on the 17-4PH SS is beneficial to the bonding strength of the infrared brazed Ti-6Al-4V and 17-4PH SS joint.
