Abstract
Background: Synovitis involving the hip joints cannot be easily detected by inspection or palpation. However, ultrasonography may have a new role in this field. Materials and Methods: Ultrasonographic distances between the hip joint capsule and femur were measured using a 3.5 MHz probe in 50 healthy Taiwanese adults. Results: The shortest distance between these two points was 3.0 mm and the longest was 8.0 mm, with a mean distance of 5.5 mm (SD, 1.2 mm). Differences between the right and left hips were less than 1 .0 mm. No correlation was found between the ultrasonographic distance and the subject's height, body weight, age or sex. Conclusion: It can, therefore, be concluded that the reference distance between the hip joint capsule and the femur in the healthy Taiwanese adult is 5.5 mm, which is slightly larger than that of the Caucasian population.#C2293062
