Abstract
Distillation is by far the most important and widely-used method of separation and purification in the petroleum, chemicals and related industries, and it also consumes by far the most energy. Consequently, much research has been conducted on energy intensification of distillation processes. Here, recent research on five energy intensification strategies is reviewed: cyclic operation, condenser-reboiler heat integration (including column stacking), heat pumps (including heat integrated distillation (HIDiC)), side-streams, and thermal coupling (including dividing-wall columns (DWCs)). After reviewing this literature, we offer observations about the state of the art in this field and recommendations for possible future areas of research.
