Abstract
To protect the youth and decreasing the social cost of the accidents due to brain injury , the helmet law which was inplemented in Taiwan since 1997 enforced the use of helmet while riding motorcycle One of the purposes of this study was to
calculate the difference in quality adjusted survival year (quality adjusted life year QALY)of the traumatic brain injured patients with or without helmet resulting from motorcycle accidents before the enforcement of the helmet law in Taiwan. The result reveals the value of quality adjusted survival year(QALY7O.9)among the patients with helmet is higher than the value of patients without helmet (QALY582). Thus, wearing helmet successfully improved the long term quality of life of motorcyclist. The second purpose was to examine the change of motor function of the traumatic brain injured patients within 1 year since onset Apparent improvement can be seen in the walking velocity and balance function(Berg balance scalc;standing forward reach)between land 3 months post onset Due to the limited number of cases availiable, the change in 6and 12 months follow-up remains unclear.
