Abstract
Currently, there are many mechanical optical switches still assembled manually, which accounts for the high price of optical switch due to the low throughput and time consuming of the assembly process. In this paper, we engage in the research of mechanical optical switch and its automatic assembly system techniques. We have successfully developed an automatic assembly system for mechanical optical switch. In this system, we use CCD and image process to assist the gripper which was mounted on the 4-axis micro stage in catching the output housing module and then implement the coarse alignment process by taking advantage of IR card that can show the invisible light spot on it. The fine alignment process is carried out by combination of optical light searching algorithm, motorized micro stage and power meter. Finally, we use UV light and UV glue to package output and input modules together to finish the processes of assembly of mechanical optical switch.
Experimental results showed that our optical switches can meet the international specification called Bellcore for optical switch and the developed automatic assembly system can not only largely reduce the assembly time but also enhance the stability of insertion loss of optical switch in comparison with those assembled by human.
