Abstract
In this study, measurement method and results for physical properties of chitosan membranes made from the carapace of the soldier crab Mictyris brevidactylus were discussed. Tensile strength, moisture and membrane thickness of chitosan membranes with various degree of deacelyation (DD) were measured. Besides, the physical properties of artificial chitosan membranes were further compared and discussed.
Experimental results showed that the maximal membrane thickness and the minimal tensile strength were obtained by using various chitosan membranes with DD value about 48 % ~ 55 %. In chitosan membranes with lower DD, strength of membrane decreased during DD increase. However, in the chitosan membranes with higher DD, strength of membrane increased during DD increase, but membrane thickness decreased during DD increase. With various DD, a high negative correlation (R2 = 0.9547) was obtained between membrane thickness and tensile strength of chitosan membrane, and a positive correlation (R2 = 0.8665) was obtained between moisture and membrane thickness of chitosan membrane, respectively.
