Abstract
For Chinese, forbearance has been considered as a common and valued emotional coping tactics in interpersonal conflicts. Since it is so important and has been generally applied in daily lives, forbearance must be crucial in psychological adjustment. However, previous studies merely focused on either basic concept of forbearance or qualitative analysis of various forbearance experiences. This study probed the relations between the transforming strategies in forbearance and psychological adjustment. Simple correlations showed the more people used Avoidable and Suppressed strategies, the less likely they could maintain satisfactory psychological state. Besides, considering the interplay of adopting forbearance or not, the results indicated that Self-Handing Style, as expressing appropriate behavior in different situations, would reach the best psychological adjustment. Furthermore, another cluster results, which focused on the pattern of different strategies in forbearance per se, illustrated the trend towards adopting Empathetic and Cultivated strategies, in contrast the trend towards adopting Suppressed and Avoidable strategies, would bring about better adaptive status. This study pointed out that in addition to explore the simple correlation of different tactics respectively, the profile of adopting different strategies would exhibit more information about adaptive meaning in forbearance. To sum up, Chinese consider forbearance as a multi-element concept. In order to promote psychological adjustment, people should not only perform self-handing behaviors, but also show the tendency to adopt positive tactics as being in forbearance.
