Abstract
The purposes of this study were to investigate: 1) the characteristics of catalog users, 2) the behavior of catalog users, 3) users' views on catalog, and 4) the comparisons of card catalog and online catalog. A total of 692 readers from 26 libraries (including university libraries, special libraries, and public libraries ) were interviewed. Among them, 334 were card catalog users, 63 were online catalog users, and 295 were nonusers.
The results indicated that less than one-fifth of the library readers used catalog before checking out library materials. Most readers learned how to use catalog by themselves. Title, author, and call number were the bibliographic information which beibg examined most often by catalog users. Over one-half of readers answered that subject serarch was the primary purpose for visiting library. Over two-thirds of the catalog search were successful, and over three-fifths of readers answered that catalog use was not difficult. After encountering failure at the catalog, less than one-fifth of readers ever asked for librarian's assistance. Reader's impression on online catalog was significantly better than that on card catalog. But there were no difference on search time amd success rate between online catalog and card catalog.
