Abstract
The Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) is an important aquaculture species in Taiwan. However, the elvers (glass eels) needed for aquaculture production are still dependent on catches from the wild, where production is continuously declining because of over-fishing and environmental degradation. Thus, artificial propagation becomes the key point for the sustainability of the eel aquaculture industry. The main problems for the artificial propagation include: (1) the insufficient knowledge on the mechanisms of eel maturation; (2) the unstable fertilization and hatching rates of eel eggs by long-term induced maturation; and (3) the unknown culture conditions for larval rearing.
