Abstract
Undergoing micro-invasive implant surgery, ultrasonic dental tools might result in the hazards of soft tissue during sinus lift procedures. However, commercial ultrasonic instruments could not operate with ultrasonic dental tool simultaneously. Therefore, a sensor should be integrated into the transducer for ultrasonic dental tool to avoid the undesirable damage.
A piece of piezoelectric ceramic ring is placed inside the transducer as a piezoelectric sensor. This sensor employs piezoelectric effect that generates different voltage under invariant mechanical excitation. By analyzing the output signals from the generator, stiffness at the contacting point between the transducer and the object could be detected. The construction of sensing system is identical to that of piezoelectric transformer. The designs of piezoelectric transformer become useful reference on adjusting the state of the senor..
Different locations and types of the sensor are designed and the effect of these factors is investigated in this study. The sensor is able to achieve high stiffness sensitivity up to 2.89 V-m/kN.
