Abstract
Siku Quanshu Zongmu(《四庫全書總目》) has been the most well-known annotated bibliography in China since the late 18th century. It is highly valued by scholars and is considered as a research guide for students and scholars who study Chinese classics. Zongmu is comprised of annotations (tiyao,提要). The completion of each annotation is basically a three-stage process. First, a scholar is assigned to write the first draft annotation (so called fenzuan gao,分纂稿) for a book. Then, the draft is revised or re-written to become an introductory annotation (so called geshu tiyao,閣書提要). At last, all the introductory annotations are further revised or modified and put together to form the Zongmu tiyaoes. Due to the three-stage process, researchers have found that the contents of these three kinds of annotations are not exactly the same. Also, some comparative studies have been conducted to explore the differences among these annotations. It is the goal of this study to further examine the differences and changes of these three annotations during the transformation process.he researcher first collects book samples whose draft annotations, introductory annotations, and Zongmu tiyaoes are simultaneously extant. This sample is consisted of 368 books. Because the researcher intends to focus on books belonging to the literature division, the sample is reduced to 153 books. Among the 153 books, the three annotations of each book are thoroughly and explicitly analyzed and compared. The comparison is mainly focused on the following four aspects: (1) the recording format of title and volume, (2) matters related to the book’s author and its publishing condition, (3) matters about the contents of the book, and (4) the critique or value judgment of the book.
