Abstract
Young Farmers in Taiwan get much attention of the government and media in recent years. Most reports focus on the successful cases, however, the true is that farming is not easy and smoothly as expected. Based on interviewing young farmers around Taiwan, this in-depth report reveals the problems and challenges in their real life, and also the way they dealt with it. Among various challenges, this report focuses on those common young farmers have encountered and been affected. The first chapter indicates that farmers do not need people''s praise or sympathy, but understanding who they are and how they live. The following two chapters concern on the uncertainties before the harvest and the pressure of the contemporary farmers to sell the product by themselves after that. The cases in the third chapter also show difficulties and necessities of contemporary farmer’s cooperation. The next two chapters enlarge the scope from the young farmers themselves to their relationships with families and neighbors, talking about the run-in period respectively of the second-generation farmers and the outsider farmers. This report also concerns different voices beside Taiwanese male farmers. With the cases of the aboriginal farmers going back to the land and the female young farmers capably in charge of the farm, the report explains how they fight for the identification and the life they want in the traditional rural community. At last, the report exams influence of the structural factors on the young farmers, argues that contemporary farmers not just strive for a better life for themselves, but also improve the farming environment and create more possibilities for agriculture and the rural area in their daily practices.
