Abstract
Placenta growth factor (PlGF), beside its role in placenta growth and maturation, has
been found to be related to the pathogenesis in arthritis, preeclampsia, or pulmonary
development. Regarding its role in the central nervous system, it was found to be
up-regulated in brain tumors or following cerebral infarction. The precise role of
PlGF in the cerebrum, however, remained unclear. By middle cerebral artery
occlusion model (MCAO)in the mice, we studied the expression of PlGF following
cerebral ischemia. Our data showed that PlGF was upregulated early after MCAO.
Although the major pathology was in the basal ganglia, PlGF elevation was more
prominent in cerebral cortex than basal ganglia and lasted for 5 days. The precise role
of PlGF will be studied in the following year in PlGF knock out mice and sFlt-1
(PlGF receptor) knock out mice.
