Abstract
Background: Vertigo/dizziness often occurred as a prodromal or an accompanied symptom in systemic disorders such as metabolic disorders, vascular disorders, hematologic disorders, neurological lesions, endocrine disorders, and immunological disorders. Methods: From July 1992 to June 1997, 6724 patients with vertigo, dizziness, tinnitus or hearing loss were enrolled in this study to investigate the prevalence of systemic disorders in dizziness population. Results: Of 6724 patients, 1028 (15%) cases with hyperlipidemia played the top one systemic disorder in dizziness population, followed by migraine, hypertension, diabetes mellitus etc. Conclusions: Patients with vertigo, dizziness, tinnitus and/or hearing loss should be systemically evaluated by history taking, physical examination, blood examination, and a battery of neurotological testing.
