Abstract
Abstract Straightness, defined by minimum separating parallel lines, was usually evaluated by means of the least squares method or optimization techniques. A new approach which can uniquely determine straightness from measured data based on geometrical considerations has been proposed by the authors previously. The idea of the approach is elaborated, and a sound mathematical background is given in the paper so that similar approaches to estimating other geometrical tolerances can be developed. The concept of a geometrical EigenPolyGon (EPG) model is described, and the relationship between the EPG and straightness is derived. The computer algorithms to construct EPG and then to calculate straightness are also proposed. Finally, the developed approach is verified through the use of some sampled measurements.
