Abstract
After 1949, when Marxist-Leninist
thoughts became the dominant literary
ideology in China, the literary histories of the
1930s were written from the perspective of
Shanghai, portraying the Modernists,
Bourgeois Liberalists, Nationalists and
humorists as “counter-currents” of the Leftist
literary cause and the victory of the Leftist
literary credo was a historical necessity. This
project offers an empirical case to challenge
this master narrative by using the
oft-neglected Symbolist Movement in Peking
in the 1930s as an axis to evoke the totality
of literary activities there. The result will
show that the conflicts in the Shanghai
literary system might have gained its energy
from the Peking system, which cultivated the
major literary foes for the Shanghai Leftists.
The main part of the project will present the
academia of Peking, constituted mainly of
Peking University, Tsing-hua University, and
Sino-French University, as literary
institutions. Through the design of
curriculum, hiring of teachers,
master-disciple relations (which facilitated
the latter’s admission to literary coteries),
literary societies in school and the
publications of academic bulletins, the
symbolist aesthetics was codified as the
viable literary expression and the
practitioners were recognized and rewarded.
Moreover the literary activities within the
academies spilled over into the adjacent
literary environments, allowing the academic
literary taste to take root in society,
evidenced by the fact that students or
graduates from these universities assumed
editorial posts in literary supplements or
newly found literary magazines. These
3
observations will be supported and
documented by a rich collection of
materials— translated poems, criticisms,
essays, commentaries, passing references,
biographies of related figures, curricular and
administrative records of the academies in
question.
