Abstract
Automation is an irreversible trend in AEC industry due to labor shortage, high risk, low level of digitalization, low margin of profit, etc. Traditional tunnel planning is a time-consuming iterative work among different expertise. For the purpose of increasing the efficiency of tunnel planning, this research presents an automated planning system for mountain tunnel construction projects. The system uses the improved A* algorithm that accounts for requirements by road design specifications to automatically create a region of possible alignment. Then, it automatically streams the alignment data to assist construction of geological profiles and considers both rock classification and support category to estimate the project's cost and schedule. Finally, visualization of planning results is provided. The research result shows that, the process automation supported by the developed system can significantly improve the productivity of engineers in planning of mountain tunnel construction projects. © 2021, Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering.
