Abstract
A framework based on the constrained theory of martensite to study the formation and relaxation process of microstructure is proposed here. The principle of energy minimization requires that martensitic variants are patterned in a special way to reduce the total free energy. Further, it is well-known that microstructure formed in thin films can be significantly different from that formed in bulk materials. The proposed framework is then used to investigate microstructure in martensitic thin films. A variety of microstructures for a clamped film with different applied strains are predicted and the simulation results are found to agree well with the theory.
