Abstract
“Intergenerational income elasticity” is an important issue in the studies of social mobility, however, there is rare studies of it in Taiwan. This study uses Taiwan''s “Manpower Survey” to estimate the intergenerational income elasticity between fathers and sons in Taiwan for 1996 to 2010, setting up a framework of the social mobility in Taiwan. However, due to the lack of longitudinal data in Taiwan, this study apply two methods, instrument variable as Solon(1992) and lifetime income proxy as Bjorklund and Jantti (1997) to the models. The estimations from these two methods are similar and indicate that the social mobility in Taiwan is loosely worsen with years.
It’s also show a high correlation between inequality and elasticity, compiling with the concept of Great Gatsby Curve. As to the comparison between other countries, Taiwan has a better social mobility than U.S and some Asia countries (area), but still worse than Europe.
