Abstract
In the isolated phrenic nerve diaphragm preparation of mice, simultaneous incubation with two neurotoxins (β-bungarotoxin + crotoxin or + taipoxin; crotoxin + taipoxin), using concentrations of each producing neuromuscular block in 2·5-3 hr, resulted in much more rapid block than expected for two-fold higher concentrations of each presynaptic acting toxin alone. This indicates that these toxins mutually potentiate each other and suggests that the binding sites for these three chemically distinct toxins are different. In line with this conclusion is the finding that histidine-modified β-bungarotoxin protected against the presynaptic effect of native β-bungarotoxin whereas crotoxin and taipoxin effects were, on the contrary, enhanced. Furthermore, modified crotoxin composed of native crotapotin plus heat treated phospholipase A protected against the presynaptic effect of native crotoxin but not of β-bungarotoxin, in the chick biventer cervicis muscle. © 1980.
