Abstract
In this thesis, an active capacitor is proposed to replace the electrolytic capacitor, which has short lifetime and low reliability, of the power factor correction (PFC) converter. The active capacitor is composed of active switches and energy storage elements that a small capacitor is required to realize a large equivalent capacitance. Therefore, the electrolytic capacitor can be replaced by the film capacitor with higher reliability and longer lifetime. Conventional analysis of the relationship between the output capacitance and voltage ripple for the PFC converter is not accurate due to the simplified input current status. In order to enhance the accuracy of the PFC converter with the active capacitor, a novel approach with the input current harmonics is proposed in this thesis.
Finally, simulation and experimental results of a 200W prototype DCM boost PFC converter with output voltage 400V are presented, to verify the performance of the proposed active capacitor.
