Transpupillary thermotherapy for the treatment of choroidal neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration

A study to evaluate the therapeutic outcome and the recurrence rate of choroidial neovaxcularization (CNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) after transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) was discussed. Retrospective, non-randomized study of 83 eyes of 80 patients were done with subfoveal CNV treated with TTT. The outcome of the treatment was assessed with visual acuity, fluorescein and clinical funduscopic examination. The results show 65 membranes to be occult, eight classic and 10 mixed. TTT is an efficacious tool in stabilization or improvement of visual acuity in patients with subfoveal CNV due to AMD.
