Abstract
Studies IntoMilitarism Among The Thinkers Of Pre-Qin Times, Sun Zi Bing Fa,
And Related Subjects
The goal here is to, by way of studying the representative writings of the important
pre-Qin thinkers in terms of notions or advocacies related to militarism, link the pre-Qin
thinkers’ militarist stances to their intellectual thinking in general, and attempt to compare
such to that in Sun Zi’s The Art Of War, hoping to detect or interpret any relationship.
To keep the studies focused, the proposal is to concentrate on the four largest schools of
thinking: Confucianism, Mohism, Taoism, and Legalism. The Bibliography includes: The
Confucian Analects, Mo Zi, Lao Zi, Mencius, Zhuang Zi, Wen Zi, Guan Zi, The Years of Yan
Zi, Book Of Shang Yang, He Guan Zi, Xun Zi, Han Fei Zi, Lu’s Spring And Autumn Annals.
Also examined will be the four ancient manuscripts previously lost but unearthed and
recovered thirty years ago at Ma Wang Dui, namely the Huang Di Si Jing, which includes
Jing Fa, Shi Liu Jing, Cheng, and Dao Yuan.
Three aspects have been chosen as the principal focus of these studies: The first
being the author’s view on warfare―how wars are conceived, justified, and
undertaken; The second being how they define and obtain victory, avoid defeat, and
devise defense; The last being their realistic teachings on training the troops and
warring strategies. Through comprehensive and systematic inspection of the
manuscripts in these areas, we hope a clearer perspective of the early militarist
2
tradition might emerge.
