Abstract
Su Shih eulogized Han Yu with the words: “his essays rescue the literary circles of
eight dynasties from predicament, and the orthodox teachings he transmitted deliver
the whole world from miseries.” His remarks are quite proper and just. Thus far we
still focus our attention on Han Yu for his changing “pien-wen”(a euphuistic style

consisting of antithetical or parallel constructions of four or six characters) for
“ku-wen”(the classic style of writing), and for his promoting the body of transmitted
orthodox teachings to develop Confucian scholarship. In comparison with him, Yang
Hsung, a great Confucian scholar and “tse-fu”(a literary form, sentimental or
descriptive composition, often rhymed) writer in the end of Western Han Dynasty, is
less famous and of no importance at all. But as a matter of fact, Han praised Yang
again and again. We can say that Yang is Han’s model and spiritual tutor.
In this plan, we are going to make a comparison between Han Yu and Yang Hsung:
why Han identifies himself with Yang, how Han imitates Yang in literary pursuits and
scholastic field, how Han surpasses Yang, etc.
