Abstract
This study is designed to uncover how the textbooks of the learning areas of science and technology are selected and to understand how teachers’ views about the system of textbooks selection.
This study is undergone by means of documents analysis and questionnaire investigation. The former discusses (1) the learning areas of science and technology in junior high schools, (2) the system of textbooks selection and related influence factors, (3) the current situation of textbooks selection and related studies. These three aspects can serve as theoretical basis for this study. The latter is designed for junior high schools in Taipei City and Taipei County, which are divided into four kinds in terms of school sizes. 700 teachers who are teaching science and technology in the sampled 49 schools are the research targets. The questionnaire is called “the questionnaire for investigating the current situation of selecting textbooks of science and technology in Taipei City and Taipei County junior high schools.” Of these questionnaires, there are 445 effective sample questionnaires, 63.6%of the total questionnaires. This questionnaire used SPSS 10.0 for Windows package software to undergo statistic analyses such as time distribution and percentage, mean and standard deviation, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe´ method, and t-test, etc.
According the aforesaid analysis, a few conclusions are reached:
I. The current situation of selecting textbooks of science and technology in Taipei City and Taipei County junior high schools:
1. Mainly evaluated and chosen by teachers.
2. More than half of the junior high schools already have their own criterion.
3. Until now, in the same school district, the elementary schools and the junior high schools almost have no dialogue about their connection of selecting textbooks.
4. The administrative staff play a role of pushing rather than directing.
5. Although the average teacher expects the officially edited textbook, he/she wants to make a comparison between official versions and civil ones.
II. Science and Technology teachers’ view of the system of selecting textbooks in Taipei City and County:
1. Those responsible for selecting textbooks:
a. The average teacher has a positive opinion about them.
b. They think that selecting books is a sign of their own professionalism.
c. Just a few teachers already attended seminars on selecting textbooks.
2. The procedure of selecting textbooks:
a. The average teacher has positive comments on the procedure.
b. Most teachers think that schools are supposed to have their own procedure.
3. Concerning the standard or criterion:
a. The average teacher, to a certain degree, agrees with the criterion advanced by this study.
b. The most common criterion: the textbooks are required to be written in a clear and concise way in order that students can read them easily.
c. In selecting textbooks, the average teacher can do it in accordance with “Grade19 Curriculum.”
d. The average teacher is still inclined to use a textbook of traditional subject as a course requirement.
4. Factors influencing the textbook selection:
a. The average teacher, to a certain degree, agrees with the factors pointed out by this study.
b. For the average teacher, the educational factors have less influence on textbook selection than non-educational factors.
Finally, based on this study, solid suggestions are advanced to the education administrations, school’s administrative staff, teachers, and publishers, respectively. And they can be used as references for improving the system of selecting textbooks of science and technology in Taipei City and Taipei County.
