Abstract
The purpose of this work is to improve
the design of wide-angle Y-branch
optical waveguide such that the total
length of a Mach-Zehnder
interferometer can be reduced. The
annealed proton exchange (APE)
waveguide with a simplified
coherently-coupled multi-sectional
bending structure is used for the
Y-branch waveguide. The guided light
can be turned at an angle of 2° at each
corner. Experimental results show that
substantial reduction in device length yet
with high transmission efficiency has
been obtained. The Y-branch angle can
be extended to as large as 12°. These
results are useful for the design and
fabrication of the integrated optical
waveguide devices.
