Abstract
Background and Purposes: In the recent decade, there were several large clinical trials
documenting the efficacy of interventional therapies [ (including carotid endarterectomy (CEA)
and carotid artery stenting (CAS)] in severe cervical carotid artery stenosis. However, all these
studies were undergone in Caucasian countries, there was no large studies ever reported from
Asian countries. This study aimed to analyze the long-term survival in patients with cervical
carotid artery stenosis receiving different types of treatments in Taiwan.
Subjects and Methods: From January 1995 to December 2002, patients who had cervical
carotid artery stenosis of 50% or more, diagnosed and quantified by carotid duplex sonography,
were included. Patients were categorized as 3 groups: I, patients with ischemic cerebrovascular
symptoms at ipsilateral carotid stenosis within 180 days; II, patients with ischemic
cerebrovascular symptoms at contralateral side or the territory of vertebro-basilar arteries or
more than 180 days; III, patients without definite ischemic cerebrovascular symptoms. Major
peri-procedural complications (including death, stroke, and acute myocardial infarction within
30days) were recorded. Patients were followed-up till patients’ death or October 31, 2004. The
log-term survivals in three groups of patients with different types of treatments were analyzed by
Kaplan-Meier method. A log-rank test was used to compare the effects of different treatment
method and severity of carotid artery stenosis on log-term survival in subgroups of patients.
