Abstract
In recent years, the concept of smart homes has attracted much attention, and different communication technologies, such as Ethernet and Wireless LAN, have been applied to establish home networks. However, the power line communication network seems most ready for such a purpose, because power lines exist in all rooms of any house, and there is no need for re-wiring. A control center can manage all the household appliances connected to power lines. Power line communication can also overcome some disadvantages of wireless communication, such as the obstruction of signal transmission by the walls.
After introducing the basic concepts of powerline communication and products on the market, we design a practical power line communication module, which can be embedded in the household appliances. The module utilizes amplitude shift keying modulation to transmit carrier on the power line and to communicate with each other. The concept of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is used to design the module, so that functions like AUTO IP, Discovery, Description, Control and Eventing can be implemented. Users can install the module into the power line network easily without professional technique. A personal computer serves as the control center, and connects to one of modules in the power line network by the RS232 protocol. The control center manages all LCD lamps in our experimental network and demonstrates the feasibility of smart home networks.
