Abstract
Sludge-handling issues, tightening global regulations for sludge disposal, fuel price spikes, shrinking fossil fuel reserves owing to rising energy demands, climate change concerns, and public awareness are the drivers prompting increased interest in environmental engineers and scientists extracting value-added crops from sludge. Building sludge-derived resource recovery systems will help to produce environmentally benign products, reduce dependency on nonrenewable resources, and thus facilitate the conservation of natural resources, decrease human health risk and environmental pollution, and offers the routes to the sustainable management of waste sludge (ie, environmentally friendly, economically feasible, and socially acceptable). This chapter discusses various pilot- and full-scale experiences in recovering value-added products from waste sludge by applying conventional and emerging technologies. Moreover, the cost involved and payback achieved from sludge recycling are discussed. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
