Abstract
Construction industry has been the largest industry supporting domestic demand in China during recent years. As the forerunner of construction industry, architectural design has gradually become an industry of over 100-billion RMB revenue in total after 30-year vigorous growth of China reform and open policy. However, facing current challenges of intense market competition due to governmental investment slowdown and the shrinkage of real estate, players in the architectural design industry have to continuously search for differential advantages in order to survive from the tough competition. As China becoming a country with high proportion of senior population, China will face major problems, such as imbalance of population structure and the country’s late development pension system. Chinese government must lead and organize the existing three senior care systems: in-home care, community care and institutional care, Chinese senior care industries, such as real estate, medical treatment, insurance and senior care services to make a viable eco-system. The present thesis attempts to explore strategic opportunities for architectural industry broadly defined senior care industries in China. Especially it focuses on architectural offering nursing care, residential environment and medical service for the elderly. Based on industry and strategic analyses on the architectural design and senior care industry, this thesis suggests that architectural design industry could create competitive advantages in senior care industry by developing the professional design capability for senior care health industry, offering integrated solutions in senior care industry through corporate innovative design philosophy, and providing creative designs. Implications and suggestions for future contenders in the architectural design industry are also discussed.
