Abstract
We have built and tested a prototype extended-interaction klystron (EIK). The EIK is comprised of a single gap input cavity, 4 intermediate buncher cavities with 2 gaps in each and an output cavity with 3 gaps. The extended-interaction cavities, with high R/Q values, are employed for achieving broader bandwidth while maintaining high gain. In addition, all the buncher cavities are made of CuNi alloy to increase the cavity loading for further bandwidth improvement. The catcher cavity is made of oxygen free high conductivity copper (OFHC) for low heat loss. VSWR of the output coupler is designed to be greater than 10 to avoid possible oscillations in the output cavity. A two-stage depressed collector is employed for overall efficiency enhancement.
