Abstract
Light rail transit system (LRT) has broadly been discussing in Taiwan recently, for its low construction cost that is suitable for many medium size cities in Taiwan. However, light rail could use the road right-of-way (in other words, LRT may design in B or C pattern rights-of-way) and may leads to traffic conflicts with other existing vehicles at once about which citizens most concern. This study is followed by “The research of management system for LRT/BRT” of institute of transportation in 2005.
This study merely takes surface installed light rail in rectangular four legs intersections into consideration and regardless of pedestrians. This study includes three major parts – Analysis of traffic conflicts, Analysis of risks, and the Risk management.
The first part of this study simulated all possible conflicting situations under different condition-compositions with aspect to automobile drivers’ point of view by means of historical road traffic accident data in Taiwan and LRT accident experiences of other countries. Secondly, by constructing a risk-analysis system and surveying driver’s detail behavior tendencies by using general questionnaires to estimate the risk of each possible situation. The results show that the risk would rise in proportion to the relative speed between light rail vehicle and automobile. At the mean while, the familiarity to the traffic environment of drivers and the restriction levels to driving behavior would surely related with the risk. At last, this study offer some practical advices to traffic engineering design, installation and a primary sketchy of risk management system taking advantages of sensitive analysis under differing situation component.
