Abstract
This research attempts to
examine the role of trust mechanisms in
managing inter-firm alliances.We first
develop three measures, i.e.,contract adherence,flexibility beyond the
contract,and flexibility outside the contract, to describe the construct of
trust mechanisms employed in inter-firm transactions and alliances. Four major
sources that result in trust are also
identified,i.e.,economic-based,
process –based,character-based,and institution-based. By analyzing the data
collected from 230 firms listed in
Commonwealth top 1000 firms in Taiwan,we
then demonstrate first that how
Taiwanese businesses show various types of trust mechanisms towards various
nationals in inter-firm transactions and
alliances,and second,that how
different sources of trust lead to
various trust mechanisms.
