Abstract
Leiomyoma is the most common benign tumor of the esophagus. Only two cases of esophageal leiomyoma with malignant change have been documented. This report describes a case of unusual esophageal leiomyosarcoma with late recurrence, and discusses the clinical features and therapeutic implications of this situation. Clinical features and preoperative radiological findings do not demonstrate differences between leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma. Total enucleation of the malignant tumor might be as effective as a more radical resection, when neither invasion to adjacent tissues nor involvement of lymph nodes are found during operation.
