Abstract
One of the most essential premise of music theory – music autonomy – is often attacked by new musicologists. Nevertheless, even in their studies they cannot avoid using the analytical methods developed by music theory. This project will therefore investigate how it is possible for the new musicologists to present their anti-autonomic interpretations of music with the tool of music analysis. The focus will be placed upon the writings of three scholars -- Lawrence Kramer, Susan McClary and Rose Rosengard Subotnik. With this study, I hope to illuminate on the necessity and significance of music autonomy in analysis, and to understand whether analysis can still be carried out meaningfully when music autonomy is denied
