Abstract
We examine whether the relationship of orthography
and meaning in Chinese is closer than that in English,
and the role of the radical component. The repetition
blindness paradigm is adopted, in which stimulus
items are presented sequentially in a rapid serial visual
presentation, and the relationship of the two critical
items is manipulated. Part 1 examines the connection
of orthography and meaning by using synonyms of
one-character words (Experiment 1), of two-character
words (Experiment 2), using pictographic characters
(Experiment 3), and presented characters in sentences
(Experiment 4). Results show no repetition blindness
for Chinese synonyms, despite a robust effect for
orthographical identical characters. This suggests that
Chinese characters are not processed like pictures.
Part 2 examines the role of radical components by
manipulating their position, i.e., the character
structure (Experiment 5) and their relative size within
a character (Experiment 6). Results show that the
position of the radical component is encoded and it
occurs early, but its relative size is irrelevant. By
comparing the results obtained from these
experiments and those from studies in English, we
have demonstrated the universal and unique properties of Chinese character recognition.
