Abstract
Optical communication becomes more and more important due to the requirement of broadband in our life. MEMS micromirror switches are generally applied in wavelength-selective switch of WDM system with their high performance and high operation frequency.
In this thesis, the inter-channel response in a MEMS 1 x N^2 WSS is investigated by the simulation, and the theoretical model is based on Fourier optics and EM wave optics. We also have experiment data to support the accuracy of simulation results. In addition to analyse the physical meaning of the inter-channel response, we attempt to find a simple solution to suppress the inter-channel response in a 1 x N^2 WSS. It can be achieved by rotating the 2D collimator array such that no output port is aligned with the input port along the dispersion direction, because the inter-channel response is undoubtedly undesirable for optical communication.
The dispersion characteristic in free-space MEMS WSS, and the possibility about MEMS WSS can be used as VOA , are also investigated by simulation in this thesis.
