Abstract
The interaction between the Kuroshio
and the South China Sea (SCS) circulation
has drawn many attentions for years.
Previous investigations evidence that the
Kuroshio intrudes the SCS during winter
and backs to its normal path in the Luzon
Strait during summer. The oscillatory
behavior has been speculated to be
associated with the following parameters,
namely the variation of the monsoon,
stratification of sea water, the inflow
condition of Kuroshio and the local
topography. During the first year of the
project, according to the original plan and
schedule, we have conducted several moored
observations by deploying current-meters
and water level recorders at some prescribed
strategic locations, such as Heng-Chuen
Ridge, east of Heng-Chuen, Gordi Rock, etc..
Aside of these works, two extensive CTD
surveys had been conducted in the KUDEX
region too. The moored observations show
many interesting features, which are
unknown in the past. The first is a quite
persistent, near bottom counter current
occurring on the narrow continental shelf
east of Heng-Chuen. The second is the
surface currents around the Heng-Chuen
peninsula, their directions are either
southward or southeastward during winter.
Considering the facts that there are eastward
flows on the ridge south of Heng-Chuen and
the northward flows of the Kuroshio itself at
far offshore, all foregoing features then
suggests a cyclonic flow pattern emerges
southeast of Taiwan during winter.
