Abstract
The anisotropy of interacting, identical spins in a film is investigated with two kinds of anisotropy interaction. Calculated anisotropy critically depends on film thickness, microscopic structures, orientations, and surface roughness. We find that the volume anisotropy results from long-range interaction and perpendicular anisotropy is due to short-range interaction. Surface roughness usually enhances the perpendicular anisotropy. The deduction is compared with published experimental data. © 1993 The American Physical Society.
