Abstract
Traditionally archaic jades have been
identified and classified by stylistic
comparisons. The standards for comparisons
are however, full of problems and
ambiguities. The recent carefully controlled
archaeological excavations in China have
been helpful in solving some of these problems and ambiguities. The methods of the Laboratory can help
even more in solving these problems and
ambiguities. Therefore, the purpose of this project is: A. to study:
1. The nature and the sources of the
tremolite Yu of different cultures,
mainly Hongshan, Liangzhu, Chija,
Longshan and Penan cultures;
2. The crystal growth on the surface of
the tremolite Yu artifacts;
3. The whitening, reddening and
blackening of tremolite Yu artifacts.
B. to establish all the geological and
mineralogical criteria useful for the
identification and classification of archaic
jades.
