Abstract
The existence of entire solutions u of the equation Δu+K(x)e2u = 0 in R2 is studied. This equation arises from the problem of finding a Riemannian metric which realizes the given function K as its Gaussian curvature and is conformal to the standard Euclidean metric in R2. A description of the background and the history of this problem is presented.
