Abstract
The Internet of Things, smart machinery, smart manufacturing, and Industry 4.0 issues and needs continue to emerge. Using a predictive maintenance method, components can be provided pursuant to data from process condition monitoring and equipment maintenance, and tool replacement can be planned more effectively. This method can replace the traditional consumption of considerable manpower and time for equipment maintenance. This study combines vibration and acceleration sensors with a network transmission function mounted on a drilling machine with various drill tool diameters (e.g., 2, 4, and 6 mm) for monitoring the drilling process in three materials: aluminum 6061 series alloy, poly(methyl methacrylate), and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composite. During the machining process, vibration and acceleration data were directly monitored; this included the instant at which the tool touched the material, the drilling process, and the via process. In the via processing, acceleration values increased with increasing material hardness. At the same time, with respect to the diameter of the tool used for drilling, vibration increased with the diameter, which was caused by the excessive contact area of the blade. The acceleration value increased as the diameter decreased.
