Abstract
With the rapid change in all types of working environment, information technology (IT) has
played a larger role in a knowledge-based economy and become as a source of core competency
or competitive advantage for both organizations and the individuals. Owing to large ignorance
of strategic classification model of IT and the need for business strategic needs, thus, the
objective of this current research attempts to propose a strategic classification model of
information technology based on M-H theory and prior research on classification of quality.
This proposed model divided into two dimensions, including IT function attributes ’ level of
fulfillment and the organization ’s or individual ’s resultant sense of competitive intensity, which
suggests five categories of IT – Strategic Technology, Positive Technology, Base Technology,
Ineffective Technology, and Negative Technology. Finally, we suggest strategic classification
principles of IS/IT and conduct an empirical survey using a sample of Information Management
Department ’s students to demonstrate the applicability of this model. The comprehensive model
and the results in this paper would be valuable to researchers and practitioners interested in
strategic designing, implementing, and managing IT.
