Abstract
A variational principle is developed to investigate the behaviour of elastic type–II superconductors. It is shown that, with the proposed field Lagrangian and material–related Lagrangian, the governing equations and the associated boundary conditions in the thermodynamics equilibrium state can be obtained in a more systematic way. These results are consistent with those obtained by the continuum mechanics approach based on irreversible thermodynamics. A remark about the effect of the London moment which characterizes the local motion of a deformable superconductor is discussed. Furthermore, the effects of the magnetic flux flow or flux pinning are studied from the point of view of thermodynamics.
