Abstract
“Greening” home has been greatly promoted to achieve sustainable lifestyles in the early 21st century in accommodating the global environmental change. Owing that most of the propagandas and practices are centering on the promotion of living with green consumption and residing in green home buildings, this trend makes “home” become the major contesting terrain for sustainable lifestyles in contemporary livings. In addition to all sorts of green or energy-saving products, including houses, the consumption of “Nature” in home has become quite popular in city lives. Nevertheless, it still lacks serious academic examination along the line of sustainable lifestyles on this phenomenon. This paper aims at discussing how the green lifestyle has been represented and practiced in Asia cities with densely inhabited urban settings, such as Taipei, by examining how the “Nature” has been cultivated and represented in the home environment.he first part of the paper analyzes the role of increasing population of home gardening, especially indoor gardening, in domesticity and its relationship with the leisure and consumption behavior in urban living.econdly, we will examine how home gardening has been promoted via TV channels, magazines, books, and websites, so as to investigate the business of weekend flower markets , flower shops and gardening suppliers in Taipei City in order to examine their association with some definite green lifestyle(s) that have been promoted and sold at the local settings. hirdly, we will use snowball sampling method to conduct in-depth interviews with urban gardeners of different residential types to see how the home gardening have been practicing and how does it related to current ideologies of green lifestyles associated with indoor nature in Taipei.
