Abstract
With the development of the modernized power system and the requirement of the smart grid, gathering information from the power system is getting more and more important for improving the reliability and stability in power system. And a wide area measurement system (WAMS) is the fundamental system of smart grid to gather information. A WAMS mentions that a system which consists of advanced measurement technology, information tools, and operational infrastructure that facilitate the understanding and management of the increasingly complex behavior exhibited by large power systems. A synchronized phasor measurement units (PMU) is a data acquisition device utilized in wide area measurement systems. One type of PMU is known as Frequency Disturbance Recorder (FDR). An FDR is a GPS-synchronized single-phase PMU which is installed at ordinary 110V outlets. An FDR also provides an TCP/IP protocol to transmit the measured data in real time through the internet.
According to the swing equation of synchronized generator, the frequency in power system is an important index to estimate the balance of supplying power and loading power in the grid. Therefore, the information of frequencies is the major data collected by the WAMS. The goal of this research is trying to implement wide area measurement system by FDRs in the power system in Taiwan. The system contains a socket server and a website for data visualization to help operators to monitor the frequencies in the different locations of the grid. The further application is developing an algorithm for event detection and event location estimation in power system by analyzing the historical data.
